Matthew Freestone is preparing to take on the Globe 5.80 Transat from his home port of Conwy, Wales.

An experienced offshore sailor, Matthew has sailed a Dragonfly 800 single-handed around the UK and cruised extensively aboard a Vancouver 34, including a voyage to the Balearic Islands and back with his wife. His offshore racing experience includes a transatlantic crossing aboard a Corby 45, where the crew finished 20th overall and third in class.

With more than 16,000 nautical miles logged, including over 3,300 miles sailed single-handed, Matthew brings a strong blend of cruising, racing and offshore experience to the Class Globe 5.80 fleet. He also holds Yachtmaster Offshore practical and theory qualifications, together with Yachtmaster Ocean theory certification.

For Matthew, the appeal of the Globe 5.80 Transat lies in the unique demands of single-handed sailing. As he puts it, “sailing alone is both the best and the worst part of the challenge”.
